We at MERL, Inc. are currently developing an upgraded 406 Mhz system.   This unit is designed to be very lightweight and very affordable to fit the private pilot's needs. Because GPS is an excellent enhancement to the Search and Rescue system, we plan to include GPS in our 406 ELT system at no extra charge.

As of December 2007, there are NO plans by the FAA to make anyone change their ELT.
